Yeah I know it is a weird title, but hear me out before you dismiss it all together. I was a Fred-Head and still am to a certain extent. In today’s media led world of sound bites and catch phrases I thought I would try and be the first to throw out a positive catch phrase for someone who I think is a great woman and could be the first female Vice President of the United States. Right before McCain’s VP announcement I started studying up on Gov. Palin and I absolutely love everything I have found out about this woman. She is smart, a proven leader, a true reformer and all around great American. She is a great Conservative and she is energizing the Republican base! She was an awesome choice and I am very happy with her on the ticket! So, as we all await her ground breaking speech tonight lets see if we can get the word out about her awesome record and see how many Americans out there are ready to become Palin-Pals as well. Not to be confused with Pay-Pal which I use often.

Sen. Thompson Stole the Show
Sen. Fred Thompson last night at the Republican Convention showed the spirit, passion and core values that led me to support him in his Presidential bid. Sen. Thompson definitely stole the show last night with that speech! He was able to tell the story that is John McCain better than anyone else to this point and he was on point every time he took shots at the left. He is a man you want on your team when the stakes are high. I voted for Fred! However, now me and Fred along with a multitude of other Americans will be voting for a great man and a real American hero, Sen. John McCain!

Not Running!
After much consideration and prayer and discussing it with family and friends I have decided not to run for county council in 2008 as many of you assumed I would. I am in no way finished with politics or my hopes of serving the public in an elected position. I am however in the midst of making some changes in my life that would distract me from running an effective campaign.
I will continue to serve the people in the capacity that I have been in the past few years by speaking out against wrongs and fighting for what is right. Not being an elected official has not stopped me from fighting the good fight. I stood up against the Nudist camp coming to Belton and with the help and efforts of many others in our area we won that battle. I have also stood up against graphic movies being shown in our public library. Some did not agree with my viewpoint and others were scared to speak out. However, I gained the respect and trust of people on both sides of the issue and even made a few new friends out of it. Believe it or not people I sometimes disagree with. I will continue to serve my fellow citizens in everyway that I can. I still serve in the local Republican Party and I am still involved in as many things as I can be, but running for office is not on the agenda for 2008.
I thank each and every one of you that has supported me past and present and I look forward to many new adventures. I am about to start yet another battle for the Veterans in our area but I want disclose too much about that at this time. Pray for each other and pray for our Country.

I’m with Fred!
Most of you that know me know that I have not committed to any one Presidential Candidate; until now. After Senator Fred Thompson’s announcement that he was going to run for President and upon doing my own research I have decided to support Sen. Thompson wholeheartedly in his bid for the White House. I believe him to be the best qualified candidate and the one that most lines up with my own principles and beliefs. We have many good people running on the Republican ticket and many of my good friends support other candidates. However, for me the choice is now simple, Sen. Fred Thompson is the one I will support. Give Them A Chance First
I get so amused at some of the comments and the letters printed in the opinion section of the Anderson Independent in opposition to our new County Council after only two meetings. People writing things like “I can’t believe you voted this way” or “why did you vote that way?” People are already saying they are going to vote them out in two years. The fact is, this is a new Council and a new term. Some are new at it and some are old vets. However, to be fair and fair minded we must give them a certain amount of time before you start calling for blood. You will never find anyone that you totally agree with, including someone you voted for and supported. I have found myself in disagreement with everyone on Council at some point. I also have agreed with everyone on Council at some point. You have to look at a person’s record collectively and not judge them on one act at a time. How many of us would be in trouble if we were judged by only one act instead of our collective effort? Just because someone does one thing you don’t agree with does not give you the right to jump ship on that person. Give people time to adapt and feel their way around a little. Give the new Council a respectable amount of time to get acclimated. Then, if they are still disappointing you regularly, go for the jugular and mount an opposition against them.

I don’t agree with anyone 100 percent of the time. As a matter of fact, I recently spoke up and publicly disagreed with some members of Council that I consider my friends. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t like them or that they can’t handle the job. It means that we don’t agree on a certain issue. People can not be perfect and no one can satisfy everyone but with patience and understanding most people will not let you down. If you believe in someone enough to vote for them, then you should give them the benefit of the doubt, at least for a while.

Blue Over The Blue Law!
I am going to be a little in your face with people I like and respect with this one! I want to start out by saying people can be on the same side but disagree on certain issues. In my opinion the Blue Laws are out dated and unfair. I know some of you will be shocked by my opinion considering I am usually on the pro-religious side of most arguments. However, I believe the people on the pro-religious side of this argument haven’t looked at this in the right way. I think they are trying to do what is right but have picked the wrong issue to take such a stand on.
Let me explain my position with a little more eye opening detail. First, the Blue Laws hurt businesses in Anderson County. I know a large number of people personally that shop at the Wal-Mart in Hartwell on Sunday Mornings. Second, the Blue Laws don’t help the people who have jobs in factories, restaurants, convenient stores or hospitals. It has no effect on the soldiers, firemen, policemen or EMS workers. As a matter of fact it doesn’t even have a lot of effect on the only group that it is directed at, the retail market. Now listen close because I don’t want to lose anyone here. Ok, the law says that Wal-Mart can’t sell certain items before a certain time and Belks, Sears and The Dollar Tree can’t open until a certain time on Sundays. However, almost the same amount of people are already working at Wal-Mart to begin with. As far as the other stores a lot of them bring in employees in early even though they are not open, to do other things. So ask yourself who exactly are we helping by keeping the Blue Laws?
The fact is you are sending our shoppers elsewhere to spend their money. You are punishing our businesses for being in Anderson County. You are refusing to listen to the masses to cater to a very small group of people that aren’t even really benefiting from the Law.
I know all the arguments from the pro-Blue Law side. I also know that people that want to go to Church on Sundays will go to Church and people that do not want to will not no matter what you close! The sale of alcohol on Sunday is a different issue all together! You can do away with the Blue Law and still have a law against the sale of alcohol! The Blue Law doesn’t help any of the people I mentioned earlier and it hurts our local economy. It is archaic and useless and should be done away with! Also, I find it very humorous that a law that is designed to allow people to be able to attend Church instead of working seems to always get suspended for the Christmas season! If you are one of the few that believes we should keep the Blue Law then you should not want them suspended during Christmas and you shouldn’t be going out to eat, buying gas or groceries before 1:30 on a Sunday……right?

Mid-Term Election 2006
Wow, did Tuesday night surprise anyone else besides me? Yeah, I know everyone loves to talk about what they knew before election night after it is all over with but I think most Republicans in SC and across the country got a few surprises. I think the biggest surprise here in SC was the fact that Karen Floyd lost. I think most of us thought that race was in the bag for the most part. Just goes to show you that you always have to fight like you are losing until the moment you win. Nationally I thought we would lose some ground in the House and the Senate but I thought it would be a lot less than what it was.
Less us not focus too much on the negative because the night did offer up some positives for SC. We kept an awesome and conservative governor in office and we still have a champion Congressman in House district 3. We took the office of the Treasurer and we passed a stack of important Constitutional amendments to include the marriage amendment. I think now is the time for us to look forward and refocus our energy on the next two years. Nationally we have to win back the voting public’s confidence and get back to traditional conservative values. Across the state I feel like we need to tap into true fiscal conservatism while focusing on bringing in more jobs and bringing up education.
In Anderson County we had both positives and negatives depending on who you are. However, we do have some new fresh faces and hopefully some new ideas coming onto the scene shortly. I hope that everyone will go into this new year with optimism and an open mind with a hopeful heart that positive changes are forthcoming. I congratulate all the candidates that were willing to put their hat in the ring whether they won are lost. I know from personal experience that even if you lose, you still come out of it with a healthy helping of positives and a closer connection with the community. I wish all of us the best for the future! Thank you.
